Statements of Interest
Jo-Anne La Flèche (Co-Vice President 2020)
Dance and Psychology have been a significant part of my life, since my teen years. For a long time, I pursued both passions on parallel lines, each of which brought me tremendous pleasure and satisfaction. The combination of the two gave me a sense of personal balance, enrichment and creativity. In 2010, I decided to merge my passions by going back to school, hence fulfilling a long-time dream that became a turning point in my life. A dance psychologist was born! For almost ten years now, I have promoted global wellness in the dance community, by teaching psychological tools to performers and educators. Conversely, I have introduced many people from the general community to the joy of self-expression, by giving dance/movement workshops.
In the midst of this ten-year voyage, I discovered Healthy Dancer Canada during the 9th Annual Conference in Saskatoon, where I presented my research for my Master’s degree. I immediately fell in love with the Organization and its mission to enhance dancer health, well-being and performance, and to facilitate communication and collaboration among all stakeholders of the dance community. I met passionate people who shared the same values and interests as mine. When I returned home, I felt a great desire to pursue my engagement in Healthy Dancer Canada’s mission! The following January, I became a member of the Board of Directors and got involved in the Membership committee (membership renewals) and the Resources committee (review, translation, development). I updated two resources on stress management and wrote a paper on post-performance depression. In 2018, I began co-chairing the Resources Committee with Andrea Downe and Jenna Lee Hay.
After serving on the Board of Directors for almost three years, I now wish to apply for the position of Vice-President, in partnership with Karen Sudds, in order to assist you in your duties as President, in any way needed, and to pursue my involvement in Healthy Dancer Canada’s mission. I have learned so much from all these experiences, and have thoroughly enjoyed working with HDC’s members, Board of Directors, and with HDC collaborators during International Conferences. Since I firmly believe in the power of team work, a joint venture with Karen as Co-Vice-Presidents could enable us to share our combined expertise as dance educator and a health practitioner, and to facilitate direct communication in the Canadian dance community, both from the West and the East.
Karen Sudds (Co-Vice President 2020)
It has been a privilege serving on the Board of Directors of Healthy Dancer Canada for the past three years. During this time, I have gained a deep appreciation for the rich history of HDC, the expertise, and integrity of the leadership, the vital work of the organization within Canada and beyond, and the potential for significant influence in the health and wellness of the dance community of the future.
I am passionate about integrating my diverse experience in the field of dance and leadership with an academic interest in research and development of best practices in dance education and performance.
The vision of HDC to promote dancer health and wellness, optimize both performance and teaching practices, is a vision I share. I am committed to the transference of knowledge between science and studio and the building of a collaborative community of dancers, educators, researchers, clinicians, and practioners who seek to enhance the art form.
In a time of division within our country, I believe the uniting of leaders from east to west is important for the health and future growth of organizations. I would be honored to co-lead the Vice President position with Jo-Anne Lafleche. I respect and value Jo-Anne’s expertise and leadership skills and would look forward to working alongside her to lead the Board and organization into future.
