Lecture-Workshop: An Introduction to Krump Dance, and the Effects of Verbal Encouragement on the Muscular Output in Dance Performance (Justin Cancio)There will be a 15-minute lecture, giving a description and explanation of Krump, as well as outlining the history and development of Krump dance in Toronto, Montreal, and Calgary. The lecture will also include an overview of Justin's thesis project, “The Effects of Verbal Encouragement on Muscular Output in Krump Dance”. This project used surface electromyography and interview data to compare the physiological and psychological effects of verbal encouragement during freestyle Krump dancing and provided preliminary insight into the intricacies and complexities of the dance.
A 45-minute movement workshop will then follow, where participants will learn fundamental movements and concepts in Krump, specifically balance points, arm placements, chest pops, stomps, and storytelling. The workshop will be an opportunity for people to gain practical experience in Krump, as it is a highly dynamic and energetic style, with an emphasis on individual expression and empowerment from peers. |
